Breaking Down the Problem
Due to extreme heat and carbon emissions, produce is rotting at an extremely fast pace. The problem is broken down into 4 parts.
Malnourishment
India is home to 1.408 billion people, the second largest populated country on earth. From that, over 224 million people are malnourished every day, and 43% of all children in India are severely undernourished.
Farmers in Poverty
India is the largest producer in the food grain industry (25%) and the largest consumer (27%) yet over 70% of their farmers are living in poverty. 67% of Indias crop comes from smallholder farmers as well.
Expensive cooling systems
Currently, refrigeration-transport systems are about $22,488 USD, a price that farmers can’t afford as they earn about $300 USD per month. These high prices restrict farmers from expanding their buisness.
Carbon emissions
9.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted annually, 40% of this comes from the lack of food transport in the cold transport chain. Food waste accounts for nearly 1/5 of the carbon emissions globally, 23% coming from food waste/ production.
The Solution
Freeze targets these core issues through four key solutions. First, we have designed 5 base models, that were scientifically tailored to meet over 80% of farmer’s needs. These models range in price and efficiency, providing different levels of support to each. Secondly, we have customizable fridges, where you can modify each aspect, ranging from size and materials to the temperature in each sector. To further help farmers find more consumers to sell to, we have created a buy fresh system available to retail stores and individuals. Finally, we see that there are millions of embedded problems within each community and we can’t attack them all, so we have created a fund for rising farmer entrepreneurs! This is a small loan with minimal interest rates to help kickstart farmers’ business ideas for expansion.
The Science Behind Freeze
So what exactly do we do? Our cooling system is designed to provide an affordable and energy-efficient way to keep your truck’s cargo cool, utilizing three main components: a circular ventilation hole, honeycomb filters, and a water drip system. This system works by leveraging natural cooling processes, ensuring your goods stay fresh without relying on expensive refrigeration units.
The first step in our process is cutting a strategically placed circular hole in the top of the truck, allowing for optimal air circulation. This hole is carefully engineered to prevent excess water from dripping back into the truck, maintaining a controlled cooling environment. Next, we line the opening with a high-efficiency honeycomb filter, which is capable of blocking over 90% of dust and debris, ensuring that only clean, fresh air enters the cargo space.
The water drip system, which runs along the top interior of the truck, is designed to distribute a controlled amount of water over the honeycomb filter. This system uses as little as 2–5 liters of water per hour, depending on external conditions, making it a highly water-efficient cooling solution. As water drips onto the filter, it evaporates and pulls heat from the air, significantly lowering the internal temperature of the truck. On average, this process can reduce cargo temperatures to 27°F (-2 C), making it particularly effective for transporting perishable goods in hot climates.
